Just over a year after the release of their mighty first 12 inch - Organic Blob/Wave Shadow on SST - comes the debut full length from the french duo Jean Luc Silvestre and Jean Philippe Bord. Psyside have obviously been hard at work cultivating their sound over the last year, giving us a hint of whats to come with the excellent "Virtual Reality" on the Origins compilation (Turbo Trance Records). With this release the intensity of the music has shot up several notches again. Their mastery of composition has evolved, the sound has become tighter, injected with an original style - a hard and furious fractalite chaos.
This is dark intense psytrance for the peak of the night, along the lines of fellow frenchmen Hyper Frequences and the Spanish Neuromotor.
Psyside have incorporated some techniques, structures and approach from the minimal side of psytrance, infusing their full-on sound with intelligence and intricacy, binding it into a tight powerful force. The music is very psychedelic, oozing with energy and intensity, dark, without being overbearingly moody or depressing. There are some lighter, groovier moments that help the album retain a sense of fun often missing from full-on psy releases, such as with the track "Krusty Burger ... with cheese", heavily spiced with Simpsons samples. On most of the other tracks however screeching synth leads and relentless rolling and pounding basslines are sculpted into a chaotic soundscape, pushing along like a tripping bulldozer with a chronic butt wiggle waltzing with a 10 foot chainsaw.
Its hard to pick favourites here, as the quality is evident throughout, but to these ears Galactic Law, Mint Taste and OGM Red Alert sound especially tasty. Highly recommended if you like your psy hard, intense and psychedelic.
